Country Situation
The economy of Belize is primarily dependent on exports of bananas, sugar and
citrus. More recently it has been diversifying into tourism, other services and
shrimp farming. Sugar, the chief crop, accounts for nearly half of exports,
while the banana industry is the country's largest employer. Other agricultural
products, 45 percent of which are exported to the U.S. include cocoa, citrus,
lumber and fish. Recently, Belize has diversified into tourism, other services
and shrimp farming, and the nation saw real GDP growth of four percent in 2000.
Aided by international donors, the government's key objective remains the
reduction of poverty.
